Mammals of Nepal
Tej Kumar Shrestha
Nepal’s treasure of wild mammals is as spectacular and varied as the land itself. Nepal’s more than 215 odd species of mammals recapture a wide spectrum of the total fauna of the whole Himalayan range. No other country of such a small size encompasses such a diversity in the form of mammals that survive today. Some of the rarest, noblest and most beautiful wild mammals in the world are to be found in Nepal. But they are unlikely to survive unless something is quickly done to save them. Still surviving in the wilds are the muck deer, blue sheep, wild yak and more precariously the tiger, the common leopard and the snow leopard. Many unique highland mammals are exclusive to the Himalayan foot-hills of Nepal. The graceful Gangetic dolphin, the elusive slow loris, the flying foxes, charming blackbuck the list is endless. In this country, the witty Himalayan black bear lives close by the playful red panda. Here the curious one-horned rhino ambles freely with the wild elephants. The magnificent swamp deer with its twelve tined horns grazes with velvety to the fierce bison.Nepal is the home of many a real and mythical from. It is also the fascinating land of the abominable snow man: an object of fantasy, joy and mystery. Mammals of Nepal will be of interest to anyone with active interest in Natural History and will be useful reference for students of mammalogy and conservation.
